Hey folks. Creative maker in Florida here. Losing housing in December. Seeking to fund a move back to WA, to live in sustainable community and implement PP systems. Even have some people there interested in building our own 'kamp'. Please share if you can. gf.me/u/y3ug4x

Hi all. Checking in from Seattle area (Bellevue specifically). Done a little bit of diy plastic injection in my garage but curious to see if there are others in the area and what success they have had.

@Palomino Plastic How did your diy shredder experiment go? (edited)

Also curious if anyone knows about this project and potential eligibility for use (alumni? staff? current students? Research partners?). It would be nice to test some of my crazy ideas before investing in expensive equipment. Wonder if I would just need to find a current student/staff/researcher to collaborate with and test stuff?

Anyone still active? I'm working on machines to begin glass crushing and plastic shredding (to start) so I have the plastic and sand on hand for bricks in Eastern WA.

Still here, been kinda quiet.
6:45 PM
Which shredder are you building?
Avatar
I was going to build the plastic shredder first, but during my research I found that there is no glass processor in WA, so I'm starting there (working with a few wineries on solutions/service) I'll have the glass crusher done before the end of the month, plastic shredder is next month, then the extruder and wash/dry process before the end of the summer. I'm working on an 18 month plan to be able to process all recyclables locally.

I'm interested in collaborating. Can you send me the crusher plans? I almost have my shredder built, a V2.
Avatar
I will let you know how the testing goes! 😆 I picked up 3 motors today......all look remanufactured and came from a paper mill. I didn't realize it until I got home, but the big GE 5hp I got has duel shafts! I'm going to see if I can run 2 shredders off it.

Are they 240V? Part of the affordability problem is using 120V motors that aren't super powerful and single phase. I am focusing on gearing to get the necessary torque the shred at 50rpm.
6:48 AM
In Europe everything is 240V so the PP plans call for them.
Avatar
All 3 motors are 460V.....ordered VFD's last night.
3:19 PM
The guy that loaded them up for me had a laugh....3 people picked up their motors before me yesterday and none realized it was 460v. But hey, 3 motors for $100 isn't bad.

Probably a long shot since the last post was 2 1/2 years ago, but is there anything active in Western Washington? I do a lot of 3D printing and I just want to find a place I can shred my plastic and turn into sheets.
