Hey folks! I'm in Portland and do no currently have a workspace in Precious Plastic terms, but I am looking into working up to having an extruder so I can recycle my failed prints and do experiments with other recycled materials.
Hi all, I am in portland, OR and I work with trashhackers.org
We have expanded our workspace for member and volunteer use located at Manifestation in SE. We just expanded our work area and are arranging our equipment for easier access. We are always looking for volunteer work if anyone wants to help out and utilize the equipment. You can email us at hello@trashhackers.org for more info.

That's amazing, I wish I lived closer so I could collaborate on all my crazy ideas (3hrs away near Seattle). Regardless would love to hear about some of your experiences. You might be able to answer some of my burning questions.(edited)

I'd love to see your keychain idea! we've made some by lasercutting sheets of melted plastic, and by making injection molds out of stacked lasercut acrylic sheets.

Is that what this is? Was wondering if this was acrylic or Polycarb and if it could be milled with a cnc? How well do the molds hold up with repeat use?

Whoa now, I seen the acrylic moulds... Did you make them from discarded 'lap top/plasma tv' screens???

yes, this is just standard acrylic that you use with a lasercutter. I only used it a few times and it held up. Any part of the mold that broke i could just lasercut that new part easily. You can tell it would have done better with some extra bolts as you can see where it was oozing on one side. It picked up the detail of the rastering perfectly. The acrylic will start to deform if you keep it on there too long or have the temp turned up too high..

You can see in the pics that I used a wood spacer and c-clamps to keep the heat from soaking directly into the acrylic too quickly..
It was a little tight but it released surprisingly well. I think because the plastic shrinks slightly as it cools, allowing it to pop out. The parts where it overextruded, wrapping around the mold did try to lock into place, so we learned to make sure to cut off the excess plastic at the injection site before it cooled.
@Drc3p0 It's crude looking, I know but Frankenstein was not all that pretty and alot of people still love him(edited)

Hi, I am dying to go to Portland Oregon to visit the Machine Shop. What are the operating hours and days of the Portland Machine Shop? I would like to visit around November when I return from buying land out in Ghana, Africa. It is my mission to start a recycling business in Ghana, to help clean up the plastic waste in that region of Africa.
Hello all! We are a laboratory located in McMinnville, OR that has clean and adhesive-free 50 mL polypropylene sample tubes and caps we are looking to have recycled. Our local company will not accept them because they are too small for their process. We have been working with a few other Precious Plastic community members in the Portland area for the last few years, but we have more plastic than any one facility can take at any given time. Looking to expand our network a bit and find others in the area that are wanting/needing/accepting clean plastic. We also have an interest in making a specific product from the plastic that we could purchase from whoever manufactures it, but that is not required, mostly just trying to keep it all out of the landfills. If anyone is interested, or may know of someone who is, let us know!
Unfortunately I feel like this kind of initiative requires a lucky break of a steady source of quality material and a steady consumer to make it practical. But someday I might see if trash hackers is still going.

Those aren't "lucky breaks", but fundamental challenges posed to any business- kinda like saying "a marathon requires a lot of running to reach the finish line- and lucky breaks." Nah- just a lot of work.
