Hello NY! I think getting an effective shredder/collection space is going to be key for the future of PP NYC. Anyone who wants to house or work for this sort of operation please reach out!
Starterkits are packages of information with everything you need to know to set up Precious Plastic recycling spaces and start tackling the plastic waste problem.
I’m in Vermont, though only a mile from the New York border. My kids go to school in New York and I plan to work with their school on plastic recycling projects I’m planning out now. Anyone in the upstate ny area?
I'm looking for a working workshop in NY interested in cooperating with a Greek cosmetic brand that wishes to begins a upcycling program for their products. Please get in contact with me if you are interested. Regards
right on @CroMagMan88 . I can't contribute much of any time, but I'd be interested in throwing in a few dollars and can hopefully connect a few folks down here together and possibly with other efforts that pop up in WNY.
hm ok interesting, well ill keep your name in the loop if i do or hear anything anytime soon.

@frankthewrench have you collected anything, or anything aside form joining this group? (just curious if you have any knowledge on the processes or plastic types or what youd like to see be made etc)
Haven’t done anything. Just able to learn right now and would like to try to bring more people into learning about all this and how they can contribute.

Hey pal, I'm new to generally new to the precious plastics world. I've been doing a lot of research and business planning and funding. I'm in almost done publishing a kickstarter to get a shredder and extrusion machine in the buffalo NY area. I made some logos for a community point along with some space I can carve out in North Tonawanda to start a WNY division. Really hoping this will all work out.
No I actually presented it to a family friend and I had a couple meetings and they decided to "gift" me the money! I'm hoping to get this machine going to see what is possible then open up the kickstarter for a shredder and extrusion machine
Hey, I'm in Brooklyn with a lot of time & skills but no money looking to spend my time contributing to/building up community-based upcycling & small-scale manufacturing -- open to chat with people!

Haha yeah that’s true, it’s a small gallery/maker community but hopefully in the works to expand it to a maker space that would use precious plastics as a map(edited)
Hey all WNY'ers. Sorry I have not posted in a while. I secured money for a full machine Set! I am buying them and they should get here by Mid June I am hoping. I have an injection machine on the way that should get here by the end of April. So it looks like my operation is coming along. Once I get it all set up I will update everyone!

Hello! anyone in the hudson valley? I'd love to start a community point/collection point
Hi ilyana! My wife and I are in Catskill, NY and we are in the research phase of our plan to start a Precious Plastics community space. We're new to the recycling game, but have many other skills that make this the right thing for us now. Where are you in the Hudson Valley? We should chat!

Hey #new-york I'm doing some research - looking for funding to start up a workspace and collection point. We're searching for funds to buy a set of machines. From what I can tell, New York State only issues grants for municipal recycling projects. (https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/105603.html) Anyone here know of other grant opportunities? Or thoughts on where to look?
@Mar in Brooklyn you mean, like, the curbside trash collection company? They're called County-Waste, and it's a pretty typical trash collection company. The do single stream (plastics, glass, metal, paper) curbside pickup and take it to the Greene County transfer stations. Are you suggesting asking them for start-up funds? Or maybe partnering with them?
hmmmm. yeah, interesting. I'm going to look in to that. I don't know if that company would have a financial incentive to work with me. I'm trying to figure out the business models here and who is getting paid for doing what. Feels more and more like convincing consumers to bring their plastics directly to us may be the best route.

But funding! If anyone has any thoughts on raising money in New York State from government or institutional granting organizations. . . . . hit me up!
With big campaigns - 'help us to ...' . A company in France managed to place all over the country special bins to collect bottle caps this way, at gas stations and malls.
That made a few folks upset
Enjoy your travel through France folks, nice catch
guru
Does anyone have any information on buyers of cleaned and sorted post consumer plastics?
Happy Easter Sunday btw ️

Look into recycling projects in Ithaca region. I believes it is Tompkins county. They are awarding recycling grants which I know is far from you but they might have some info on other counties looking for ideas. Also the state sucks for funding like these projects at the moment cause of covid, I would definitely look into county funding and city and town funding sources.
Hello! I'm looking to gauge interest for a North Country Precious Plastic Co-op. I'm in St. Lawrence county and a bit far away from a lot of the PP work in the area, but I'm interested in growing a community point and some workshops here! Please feel free to reach out, including Hudson valley people, I'm sure we can connect our projects
Hi friends! We are a Brooklyn-based duo working on some ldpe/hdpe projects. We’re looking for a maker space/studio/ spot where we can keep our equipment and work. Needs ventilation/windows. Would be incredible to have access to some wood shop-type tools like a saw, etc.
My machines came in the other day, and I will be trying to get them up and running ASAP

hey y'all. new to brooklyn and really keen to get started as an artist and designer in this space. is this group still active? any active projects / spaces looking for contributions?
I'm working on a shredder + extruder rig
do you have any particular project interests right now? Depending on my schedule I may be in Brooklyn Tomorrow / Saturday
Unfortunately I’m not a good resource, I’m trying to do the same thing . Through I recently found out that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do so I have to see if I can get special permission or rework my project :(.

Originally I was seeing if I could make PP machines for my Eagle Scout Project but I found out that BSA doesn’t allow us to use the tools required for the job…
Yeah it’s slightly stupid. A 1st grader can’t use a rake, they have a welding merit badge (which I’ve done) but they din’t allow you to use welding equipment for projects… here’s the full chart if you want to look at it: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/healthsafety/pdf/680-028.pdf
Hi - Brooklynite here - im a software developer interested in putting some time / effort into computer vision spectroscopy for auto sorting plastic / aluminum / other materials to help foster recycling. Ive been doing 'de-trashing' on my own and with some groups, and its clear to me its pissing in the wind in the grand scheme of things. Cleaning up also means not having as much even hit the streets ideally.
Anyway, I digress. I'd be curious if there are any spaces in NYC that organize around these topics. Thanks.
Wish I were closer, there are not to many workspaces here in Texas (yet)

The Materials Recovery Facility can separate and process up to 48 tons of mixed material per hour, or over 300 tons of material each day. View a video that details the work of the facility.
