Starterkits are packages of information with everything you need to know to set up Precious Plastic recycling spaces and start tackling the plastic waste problem.
Hi all, my partner and I are located in SE Michigan. We have been doing small scall experiments so far. We have a 3d printer, CNC, laser engraver, and are looking to get a shredder possibly. It's hard to know where to start though.(edited)
@Franny (precious.trash.detroit) I'm located in Ann Arbor and am considering getting a shredder. I'd love to see some of your experiments and see if we could some how work together.
@Franny (precious.trash.detroit) - you can save lot's of $$ if you skip the whole collecting, cleaning, sorting , shredding thingy - at least when toying around. Industrial flakes are dirt cheap and clean. Only caveat is that those often are a little bigger than the PP/small machines want it (5-10mm), they come around 13-16 mm but still good enough for injection and sheetpress. That way you can focus more on the outcome

There are also grinders on craiglist to mill it down to a productive size as 5mm, for quite cheap as well
@-- osr-support -- Thanks for the suggestion. That's a good point. Now comes the process of figuring out what plastic products would support SE MI. Wow, I've never seen a grinder on craigslist.
Hi Michigan people! I’m starting my Master of Architecture at LTU in the Fall and I’ll be heading over from Windsor frequently (once the border opens), if anyone is working on some PP projects let me know. I would love to collaborate on something.

@Nicolas Lamoureux (PPYQG) that might help! Can I message you? Is there a way to dm on here? I’m still trying to figure out this platform. Thanks for the response

Is this channel still active? Anyone in Michigan doing anything? I'm in Jackson and looking to start setting up a full shop - from collecting to output - and looking to see if anyone can help me with advice and contacts.
I'm not an engineer, so I don't think building these machines myself is feasible, so I'm looking for someone to is able to do build, teach how to maintain, and repair if the unfortunate occurs. I'd rather support local businesses than buy from across the country, but I'll do what I have to.
Any advice/information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Michigan is basically dead. Been trying to find info to get something started in the port huron area for a year now. Most machines are made well outside this state or country.
BrothersMake on YouTube is a good source to get started if you're trying to mold small things.

@cdetrio Space is not an issue. I have 14 acres to work with + a couple of barns for storage. The main issue is cash. All the equipment on the PP websites are 10K +.

taking this advice ^^, maybe it makes sense to start with an extruder or injector, and source the flakes. Then once you're sure you can make something given some flakes, make your own flakes with a shredder as the 2nd step
Hello! I've recently purchased an injector, and I'm wondering if there's a place in Michigan to source shredded plastic? The guy I purchased the injector from recommended starting with ABS or LDPE.

Tell us more about your injector. Is it a Precious Plastics model, or another? I would tend to avoid ABS at the beginning (simply because you don't need the fumes) and start with LDPE, HDPE and PP. We have a hand-powered desktop injector that I've used successfully by just stuffing in LDPE film -- things like bread bags and gray/white/black poly mailers -- with no shredding required.
(We're in Minnesota, but happy to sell shredded and/or pelletized recycled plastic that we ship anywhere.)(edited)

It's a pneumatic press that Parma Plastics converted into an injector. Thanks for the advice; that's super helpful!! I'll definitely be checking out your store.
