I run a small (laser cutting) shop and have a bunch of acrylic (aka plexiglass) scraps that I would love to upcycle - has anyone tried acrylic before? Ideally I would sheet press (which *hopefully I can laser cut again) or inject mold. Any tips or ideas?

Unfortunately he's pretty much occupied but apparently he seems open for fun sometimes (check his books as well). Anyways, the normal route is to grab the blueprints and walk to the next machine shop (manual/repair shops). Often you can find decent rates that way.

We have a v1 shredder, and industrial granulator, 2 injection moulders, and a mini-sheeet press. Working on getting the larger v4 shredder. The v1 shredder and one of the IMs is mounted to a rolling table. we plan to take it to schools.

Look in industrial salvage yards. Your part of the country still has heavier industry. Be ready to adapt things. Just looked quickly at commercial industrial salvage and did not find anything. Be ready to deal with 3 phase motors. Not complicated you will just need an inverter to operate them. Inverters are affordable on aliexpress though right now shipping might be high.

They work OK for small-scale operations, but if you’re looking to process hundreds of pounds of plastic each week or just want to work very efficiently you should get a used industrial granulator and set it up somewhere that has 3-phase power

Do they make single phase 220 granulators

There are some 220V granulators on the market, but I’m skeptical about them. You can get up to around 10hp out of a single-phase 220V line rated for 50A, but single-phase motors are just less efficient than 3-phase. Our V4 shredder pro has a variable frequency drive (VFD) that converts the single-phase supply from the wall to a 3-phase supply. In that way we power a 5hp 3-phase motor off a single-phase outlet. In contrast, the recycle center near us has a 3-phase 30hp Nelmor granulator that’s 30-40 years old and it’s just…much better. Less fuss, no jams, extremely fast. It’ll shred 50lbs of HDPE in 10 minutes. It has an 8mm sieve on the bottom so everything comes out evenly sized and small enough to go into our extruder. We don’t have to run the shred through the machine 3-4 times to get it small enough like we do with the PP shredder.

I believe a lot of the design choices for the PP shredder some from it needing to be available for a balance of several jobs, and needing to be accessible to power that most people have to start up. Scale might push folks to larger systems, and I think iterations of the PP shredder might be able to reach for larger scale, while maintaining the accessibility of design with single phase power and size of the machines.

Hello, yes I did. The kit looks good but does not have instructions or the counter sunk holes so I had to drill them and messed one up. Ive been travelling for about 2 weeks so now I am home I can fix the issue and get it welded! Looking forward to getting it done and also finishing an injection machine.

Hello California! Peninsula Precious Plastics will be exhibiting at the Bay Area Maker Faire on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA. October 13-15 & 20-22. We will be there both weekends. you have to make sure the wire inside can handle the current or it will burn out

Well i do not want that, so there are two variables. One is finding out how many amps this machine actually pulls, so maybe there is a device to measure or calculate that, and two is finding out what my electrical system can handle and is rated for

their is a safty factor. if you run it at 20 amps you will stress the wire out (edited)

Preamble: everything behind that panel can kill you just for slipping. That said, most homes have a couple circuits that may accommodate our needs- the clothes dryer, the AC, or the oven. The dryer is often easiest, as access is typically afforded by plug, and is usually collocated to the garage or adjacent space. Our panel had enough space for a 220 circuit, but I had to re-arrange the existing fuses and wiring, then install an external box for the plug; the entire time I worked behind the panel, the main power was disconnected from the bus- but the cable was still exposed and threatening death. Still, I barely have enough power for my needs; that 220 circuit- originally installed to run a welder, now feeds a 2 HP shredder, and will also have to power the spindle on a CNC; the plastic oven plugs into the dryer outlet, cable fed through the vent access, across the garage, to where I can push the oven into the driveway (until an air handling system can be installed... if I have enough juice to run it). "you have a 20A breaker but the wires are probaly for 15 amps" I very much hope that is backwards- otherwise, there is no use for a breaker/fuse, as the wire will always act as the weak link. It make's zero sense. That said, if you live somewhere without present or historic code enforcement, the electrician COULD have done any stupid thing.

Ok, so if the wires are at 15A and 110 V how do you determine the biggest size shredder it can run safely?

Check out the amp rating of the circuit, compare it to the energy requirements and amp rating of the motor on the shredder. For example, I have an electric oven used to melt plastic plugged into my 30 amp cloths dryer circuit; the oven portion draws max 3000 watts of power- volts * amps = watts. So, a 110 volt, 30 amp circuit might sustain a 3300 watt appliance- I can run the oven, but never at the same time as the range top! Some motors will draw above indicated values when overloaded- so, always best to leave a margin. If you are running power cords- especially if they are long -they should be rated well above the tool requirements- good, reasonably priced options are to be found serving the RV and welding worlds; I'm running a 40', 8 gauge/40 amp cable to the shredder, and a 25', 10 gauge/30 amp cable to the oven. If that oven cable gets warm, I'll have to swap it out... after Winter (all kidding aside, I'll never be running it anywhere near full power). (edited)
