The World is full of conspiracies... they're just not complicated or "hidden." They are standard practice. Shadow governments and "Deep States" are real. Anyone with a casual knowledge of World history knows this. It's just that the conspiracies people should freak out about, are not as "interesting" as the bullshit ones about aliens and lizard people and what have you. Anyone see the documentary series Triumph Of The Nerds? It was made in the early 90s. About how Microsoft and Apple were founded. Gives some insight on how directionless the personal tech industry was in the early days. And how the wrong people always got the credit.

Also, now that just about everyone with a functioning brain knows that mainstream media is garbage, online media is the ultimate weapon for creating so much "noise," where anything found online, that challenges the dominant narrative on any science or socio-political issue, is either automatically accepted as "suppressed truth" or dismissed as paranoid delusion. Unfortunately, reality is not that convenient. There is such a thing as half-truth. And half-truth is the propagandist's greatest weapon. Because most people literally can't process half-truth. It's too ambiguous. Humans like certainty. That's why they always listen to blowhards who lie with conviction. Sounding "certain" is a substitute for actual certainty on the basis of demonstrable facts. It's why the "fake news" strategy is so successful. And the information bubbles it creates are deliberately cultivated. Make no mistake about that. You can take people out of a tribe, but you can't take tribalism out of people. It's primal. It's evolutionary. Clever sociopaths have been exploiting it for millennia. Because the advantages of being able to deceive large groups of people are, logically, also evolutionary. A behaviour adaptation that "piggybacks" on the primate need to follow the "Alpha Male."
Avatar
goldfishlaser#1337 12/11/2020 12:33 AM
I think the behavior is far more based on the very real need to cooperate and offload some mental tasks rather than an impulse to subject oneself to authority. Hiearchy does play a role in shortening deliberation when decisions need to be made. (edited)

goldfishlaser#1337 12/11/2020 12:46 AM
The brain is not interested in a direct one to one mapping of the real because that is too energy intensive. Instead it must find shortcuts. Some of us refine the shortcuts we use by training ourself with epistemology, humility, and rhetoric- while some have only instinct, basic logic, and community... And indeed in such a chaotic and algorithmically manipulated information space... The latter have no defense. The former at least have some defense... (edited)

1:04 AM
Like "I've seen a bear in those woods"- if throughout your week you hear three different community members report such, being overly skeptical about such a report wouldn't do you much good. But now, you have motivated actors on the internet to make you feel the same sensation... whether it's ads or conspiracy theories

I grew up in a Christian Fascist Regime run by a US-backed shadow government (much like what the US itself has become .) I've spent most of my life surrounded by unapologetic boot-lickers who were willing to sacrifice their lives (and, more importantly, the lives of the "enemies of God," simply because their "divinely anointed" White Supremacist leaders told them to.) There's not much "academic" sophistry you can throw at me regarding the human need to subject to authority that I can't confidently call "bull" on. Quoting Prof. Richard Dawkins: "The child brain, for very good Darwinian reasons, has to be set up in such a way that it believes what it's told by it's elders. Because there just isn't time for the child to experiment with warnings like: 'Don't go too near the cliff edge,' or 'Don't swim in the river โ€” There are crocodiles.' "Any child who takes a scientific, sceptical, questioning attitude to that would be dead. "The child brain will automatically believe what it is told, even if what it is told is nonsense. And then, when the child[ren] grows up [they] will tend to pass on that same nonsense to [their] children. "For most of us, part of growing up is killing off the virus of faith, with a good strong dose of critical thinking. But if an individual doesn't succeed in shaking it off, his mind is stuck in a perpetual state of infancy, and there is a real danger that he will infect the next generation."
2:21 AM
In that sense, as I indicated, it can be seen as a kind of "memetic parasite" that feeds on a more primitive evolutionary imperative (ie. group co-operation / survival) that no longer functions correctly. The survival of the "Alpha" and the survival of the subordinates are no longer linked.

I've been breaking a "rule" I made last year, that I won't even talk to Americans online anymore, because I realised I can't really hide the contempt I have for the country. It's pointless to try. But as long as I can get a few anti-American "jabs" in, every few days, I can sort of be "civil." But it requires biting my tongue, I can assure you. Anyway, I'm "cool," for now. Must... rant... sometimes... (Also, it can't possibly be news to you that the rest of the planet hates you. I mean... c'mon... seriously. Don't shoot the messenger.)

The problem rly happens when so many power hierarchies cant 'justify themselves' (like a doctor might not always have ur best interests at heart, but just by their job description they do have some authority over non-doctors as to "you really should take this/do this") personally I don't wanna put doctors in charge of the govt, but it's a different type of hierarchy than the "do this or else you go to jail" type of hierarchy (edited)

Growing up in such a society seems to be giving you (ZA) a bias in my view (not to say that it isn't a good example to discuss). You might not think authoritarianism is so inherent to human nature if you grew up in an anarchist commune (save it was run as such)? Different cultures and societies have had different levels of authoritarianism. Individuals in those societies also have differing levels. Humans actually adapt quite significantly to the conditions they grow up in. In fact that's how I read the passage about the child's brain. That's why we're capable of such radical change over time and across the globe. Its a strength and weakness to be so mutable. (edited)
12:29 PM
I'm personally highly critical of our foreign policy and hyper militarization. Bertrand Russel, Buckminster Fuller, Carl Sagan, Noam Chomsky- these are my homies not dead presidents. So no ruffled feathers here and if your tongue gets to hurting I think you should have at it. If you want to call my POV academic sophistry go ahead, (although I'm not going to apologize for reading up on anthropology, sociology, and theory of mind) it's ironic that when we're talking about community truth building you'd be so dismissive. In the end, I agreed that the same problem exists, I only disagreed on which part of the brain it hijacks on an evolutionary basis, vs what gets hijacked on a cultural level. I think it's important to make the distinction because of the vast capability of change possible in culture. In contrast, you'll never be able to get rid of the problem that humans have to mentally offload their mental tasks and all the biases that introduces. That's permanent and universal. And of course, so is being born naked, ignorant, and impressionable. (edited)

Also interesting stuff Karl, might check that out. And yeah, I think it's a good point that hiearchies exist with varying degrees of force, and do require justification or they fall apart- hence why so many historically latched on to religious justification. The US only uses religious justification sparingly- its our myth of "democracy", "freedom making" and "free markets" and the legacy of the atomic bomb that keeps the oligarchs in power. Myths whose foundations may be crumbling.... to the point that even those who usually don't have the energy to question hiearchy are starting to do so. Which is why they're cranking out so much propaganda, and why I love that there's a surge of ridiculing the propaganda by popular talking heads. I actually kind of love the state of discourse personally- I think it'll be chaotic for awhile but in the end the centrist menace will be destroyed ๐Ÿคฃ (edited)
