Hi, to me it's still unclear what the actual purpose of OSE or this very Discord server is but here a little hands on experience within the plastic recycling world : This was a 40h marathon on a now 60k CNC machine to cut the mould, in an attempt to recycle very specific industrial waste (LDPE) which is also being re-used in the auto-motive industry (to make dashboards, BMW). However, we wanted to make an interlock able seed tray patch (3x3, 40x40x50mm) and it turns out that we hit the limits of the PP v4 extruder easily on a 220V line~3P motor, at 1:10. Currently and after 3 years in the game (physically and real); I consider this the more advanced/complex mould around but also the limit of using a low-tech extrusion/injection. Stepping up the game is also quite difficult; the v4 extruder for instance wants a lathe with at least 40mm spindle hole, 4/6 jaw chuck; the motor flange is also pretty big (160mm diameter). Going for bigger gets you somewhere in the 300k range, just to get some basics done - and it's still not really scalable ... The home shredded plastic (white) btw. behaved as already expected lots worst due to it's irregular flake sizes (see v4 shredder issues). We actually have some users trying to break the wall and get at least pellets from their production waste; which is also not easy, a one stage pelletizer is in development and sees the light this days though ๐Ÿ™‚ (edited)
9:39 PM
However, possibly nothing new but sophisticated details in the molds (deep groves, drafts, fillets at a small radi,...) involves tremendous longer machining. A good surface finish for instance wants around 0.1 stepdown, at 10k RPM with a min. 8mm ball mill (which still shatters a lot). 10k RPM doesn't sound much - but it's fecking loud ๐Ÿ™‚ (edited)

Does your work include handling BOMs? Any thoughts on it? I have not found yet a good software to manage BOMs. (I don't know my requirements really yet, but I know the perfect system the moment I see it... :))
Avatar

@pcuci - looks great ๐Ÿ™‚ the purpose of the language is rather intermediate, transforming content from one source to another output format - with zero dependencies ๐Ÿ™‚ I gonna check it out in depth over the weekend - looks like a good replacement for Jekyll ... @Holger - it handles xlsx, google sheets and CSV files so far (internal query language is still missing...). To manage BOMs I am also still looking for something more adequate. More likely we have to shift from Spreadsheets to something ERP'ish. Different product configurations and also different sources makes this pretty difficult. Especially now in c19 times, one has to change quickly among different suppliers - not just material is running out everywhere but also prices changed a lot over night - to a degree that we had to refund even orders. However, til now we're using Spreadsheets but also increasingly PDM/BOM features within Solidworks which come with a bunch of extras as automatic sustainability reports - still trying to extract this data via Solidworks APIs ... There was a nice editor for BOMs somewhere on Github (Nodejs & VUE based) - I hope I can find it back. Not sure though at which level you want it ๐Ÿ™‚ BOMs seem also to rely a lot on the internal company's data organization/structure. In the next years, I am continuing with this here : Turns out that you need the BOM data in different ways across different system. For instance customers want to re-order replacements for consumables - it's really tedious and time consuming to handle this with a small team.

Right, I think so - Any particular whishes what it should do ? I need it first to validate and convert own and other models (almost done). Later on I am adding a query language to recompose assemblies, using additional internal and external data as product configurations but also to build better libraries (make it indexable as well). Plugin system is also planned - so you can hook into those pipes..

@Holger - that's a heck of spreadsheet you did there, thanks a lot ! Currently I am also a little unclear about how to deal with BOMs. For now I am trying to merge my sourcing list with the CAD output as well create internal orders sheets from it, per client request or configuration. Just got back from vacation, I gonna need another month to get back on tracks ... Is there something standard or policy to deal with CAD & Boms ?

Whilst at it, I use a lot "controllino" for commercial builds. Nice package, robust, some port protection. The "Mega" variant has TCP and Modbus integrated: https://www.controllino.com/ The only problems I had with Arduinos was generating square pulses to run steppers, fast (beyond 50kHz) - Servos want around 200kHz ! That can be really be really challenging running high speed code besides your other routines. There is no mutex or anything multi-threading on those first Atmel generations. There are newer Arduinos with mutex/semaphors but at the end it was easier to use just external pulse generators ๐Ÿ™‚ What sucks most is the limited choices of boards with debugger interfaces/pins, close to your production variant, leaving you mostly with exorbitant macros and debug print statements running fast out of memory.

then look for 'free kanban', https://medevel.com/os-kanban-tools/ ~ it's not exactly classic scrum and more for the agile environment but yet, an efficient way to deal with waste. if it's for small scenarios, 1-3 people - using tickboxes in markdown is often sufficient and fast too, eg: - Chapter/Story todos - [ ] do that - [x] do this You can have this docs on github, or hackmd.io
