https://forms.gle/upASjTHEaWdZijmd8 HPO invites you to share your skills in the field of material recycling at ยซMilano Design Week 2022ยป. The international architectural practice Andrea Caputo is curating and hosting an exhibition designed by HPO, starting this June. The exhibition focuses specifically on objects destruction and materials transformation, displaying several functioning shredding machines in front of a large public. The show is organized as an audiovisual performance, with the collaboration of sound/lighting designers and any individual who is interested in sharing their cultural or material contribution regarding the theme of material transformation. During the Design Week a series of talks, musical events, and performances are scheduled to be staged around these machines. Therefore, HPO invites all the community that gathers around material destruction and recycling to bring their shredders to Milan and/or join the event with a physical or digital contribution. With the help of the HPO staff, the machine owners will be asked to show the process to the public in some specific moments during the Design Week, based on their availability. The exhibition will be set up in a 350 sm venue, nearby Milano Centrale railway station. It will be open to the public from 6th to 13th June 2022. If you are interested in bringing your shredder to Milan please let us know, so we could manage to bring it there in the last week of May. All inquiries can be sent to info@h-p-o.eu If you are interested in participating or in giving a proposal, do not hesitate to send us an e-mail. Submission: We ask you to fill out this form by May 6th and you will hear back from HPO immediately. https://forms.gle/upASjTHEaWdZijmd8 www.h-p-o.eu www.andreacaputo.com

Hello everyone, I'm looking for someone to help us make/source moulds for our injection moulding machine. It's only got a 20g shot size so I'm really struggling! We don't have particular moulds in mind but do have a couple of requirements, as our workshop is an "education lab" we need items that are usable in some way (i.e. not just ornamental) so plant pots, coasters, carabiners, book holder opener (sorry don't know the actual name!) or phone stands and the like.

I've contacted everyone listing as posting to the UK and no one has the capacity for 20g shot moulds... If you've seen something I've missed links would be really helpful!

Sorry I have no concept of the relative size. It's unfortunate that the listers are unable or unwilling to scale down to meet your needs.

I think it's a bit confusing metric for measurements too. Like depending on which plastic you're using would 20g me different end volumes?? Like I hear some of the softer plastics and up inflating slightly and are "puffies" than other more dense plastics. I think maybe a better metric would be maximum volume. What's the maximum cubic volume your machine can out put. Being able to measure the volume of a cavity within CAD software while difficult, would still be easier than calculating the volume needed for various plastics that have a maximum total weight of 20g.
๐Ÿ’ฏ 1
Avatar
Measuring volume is super easy as long as you have the 3d model. Slice the model in Cura or the slicer of your choice with 100% infill, no brims/skirts, no supports and it will show you the needed plastic in gramms.

Hey Sam - I just uploaded my pen mould on the Bazaar, but they are about 7g each - so you'd likely get both pens + the sprue with your machine! Id be happy to modify the mould at no cost for you with a dam, so you could optionally get one pen per shot but still be able to shoot both pens if you upgrade your machine in the future? Bazaar link here - https://bazar.preciousplastic.com/moulds/injection-moulds/ballpoint-pen-mould-tool/

Because of my struggle, I wanted to share the rest of the journey of building it, running it and testing out the filament it produces. Please let me know if this is something of interest to any of you guys. Or if theres something particular in relation you would like to know. (Sorry if long winded. Thanks, we also consider to build a pet bot, but yet we haven't chosen a design. One thing I was curious about is rather about the bottles. Is there a big variance between the tickness of different bottles? Is there already a measurable difference in thickness across the bottle (depending on whether we measure on a wide or narrow part of the bottle)? (edited)

In the end it probably doesn't matter that much. I doubt that this pet filament is usually used for prints where high accuracy matters. But I am just curious what accuracy I could expect ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am building a design tool for PET pultruders. It will allow you to state your needs, skills, tools and parts on hand, and create machine designs that fit these constraints, including the bill of materials, a 3D model and, ultimately, a rough assembly guide. Clearly the applications for the technology could extend well beyond Pet pultruders. It's pretty ambitious, and I don't know of any tool like it. I'm going to start with the standard 3D Recreator and my modified Recreator as test cases, and evolve it from there.

aside of plastic, it could also be around translating lines for socialmedia&pages, subtitles of youtube-videos, up to editing graphics for banners, etc. could be for plasticbased-projects too also if furnitures are planned to be made of plasticshapes, not by a printer but molded in its way? open for housingprojects/volunteers or collaborating with people, maybe as pottedplant's design to regrow food or if the postage-thingie should be an individual shape by plastic than getting rusty as it's made of metal if it gets rainy or snowy?

Hi from Florida, @Slightquills! Can I send you some recycled PET plastic. I reform 2-liter bottles into 3d printer filament, but it could also be used for weaving, I'm sure. I suspect it would be more of a pain to work with than wood products, and it's transparent. On the other hand, you can heat it to fix it in a specific shape. Currently I cut it into strips about 8 mm x 6 meters, which I then form into 1.75 mm diameter round filament. These dimensions are flexible, though. If you want to give it a try, private message me the address to send it to. If the strips work for you, $50 will get you a perfectly serviceable cutter. If you need the filament, I'm working on a design that crafty people like you could assemble and use. Maybe you being one of our testers is in your future? (edited)

We will also need help designing the animal set, which may or may not be done by the same person creating the molds. I run a non-profit hackerspace that has a precious plastic effort inside of it. With any business, I'd suggest starting with a focus on how to make money/make the finances make sense then work backwards. If you're thinking not being a non-profit limits you in some way you can connect with an existing non-profit or a community foundation and ask them for "fiscal sponsorship", that process would allow you to work under their exemption while taking advantage of their tax status. Typically you give away a few percent of any donated income in exhange for the service.

That is some great information, thank you! I would like to see if it is legal and ethical for a non-profit shredder space to sell to a for profit injection space if the former sells flakes to the latter and the books stay separate. Even if they do, I do not know if I could be involved in both or have to choose between the two
Avatar
Yeah, you can split up a business however you want. The non-profit needs to fall into some public benefit category with the IRS (assuming you're in the US) to qualify for exemption. This can be pretty simple, you could literally be a training program, etc for people to be gaining intro level job skills, could be a community program that you're using for outreach to demonstrate/talk about/gather plastic waste, etc. The for-profit business is just a for-profit, just because they buy material from your non-profit doesn't mean they're uniquely benefitting assuming you're willing to sell that plastic publically otherwise

I'd add: "non-profit" does NOT mean "doesn't make a profit from its activities"- tax-exempt organizations most definitely can make money. They can also pay professional employees. (edited)
Avatar
yep, any non-profit that's going to be around for any length of time absolutely needs to have a viable business model - provide a service and charge for it, otherwise you're relying on donations which is really just glorified begging and hoping someone supports what you do ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm not sure if this model works for you. I know a non-profit that basically has their finances guaranteed by a for-profit business. The non-profit will pull in money with it's own activities, but if I'm not mistaken, they fall a little short on their own for income. The for-profit business will give work to the non-profit organization as well, so it's not like they're idling away. It's an interesting system, but I'm not sure how this works in other countries or if it can work with a shredding workspace. Food for thought I suppose.

I like the idea of using the non-profit to train people and give jobs to low income folks. Also, I would want to reward volunteers/staff for their work collecting and cleaning plastic. For the staff I would pay a wage, for volunteers, I would give points for the amount of plastic supplied and/or cleaned. Then with the for profit I would kick back some new plastic products or buy them through the bazar to exchange for points

The area I am trying to research now deals with writing my business plan. I am researching plastic recyclers in my area, but what I find has most to do with collectors and single stream sorting. These groups have websites that say they sell baled plastic to recyclers, but the bales are dirty and still need to be processed. I could defiantly see a niche for reaching the demographic that pre-cleans their plastic before sending it through single stream and having them give it to me instead for points. My concern is that I can't find any shredders in my area because that business wouldn't really have a public facing media presence. Also, there are no work spaces around, and I would like to start one, but as I mentioned before, I don't know if I can be involved both in the non-profit and the for-profit (even though each side needs the other to start an ecosystem) (edited)

Hi, I'm a mechanical engineering graduate from the Philippines. I'm currently based in the United States right now for medical reasons but if any of the Precious Plastics spaces from the Philippines have any remote work (preferably related to engineering) I could help out or work with please feel free to message me. Hello everyone! I would like to share a bit what we do in case we find some enthusiasts that would like to start their own plastic recyling journey ๐Ÿ’ซ A little bit of backstory, Yann ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท , Joseph ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and I ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ worked within the Precious Plastic core team for four years, we initially joined as volunteers during the development of Version 4. During our time there, we were responsible for starting the Precious Plastic "Collabs" were we offered machines, onsite setup/training, and consulting to other organizations looking to implement local plastic recycling solutions. This was the primary business model for Precious Plastic during that time. We recently started our own machine shop here in Portugal ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น to assist organizations with setting up small scale plastic recycling projects, as we accumulated a lot of practical knowledge in this area and know that many organizations and individuals need help. That's why we started MAD PLASTIC (https://www.instagram.com/madplastic_) - to consult organizations on small scale recycling projects, and provide the machinery, molds, and training to implement them. Here you can see some videos of us setting up the workspaces and training people on how to run them during our time in Precious Plastic ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yxHtSx2d4I&t=2s ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ด https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62paZrW7OXU&t=1s ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSGz05O5Meg Let us know if you are interested on starting your recycling journey or know someone that might be! ๐Ÿš€ We make small to large projects! So don't hesitate to ask ๐Ÿ˜ƒ We also provide consultancy services, product design, molds, product productions, R&D projects, on-site training and installation and more!
