hey @Community point 's! We have had the request a few times to make a channel specifically for community points to exchange ideas, knowledge, posters, strategies etc. You guys are glueing the Precious Plastic Universe together and should have a place to come together yourself. So here is a "private" channel for everyone that signed up with the community-point badge. Where are all you folks from? 🙂

Was wondering, what were your thoughts about this? If you have any questions or ideas about the role, platforms, tools - we'd be happy to hear them! 🙏

I looked at them a while ago. I downloaded both the community and collection kits. I'm going off of memory here but there was one part in the collections kit that would also be useful to have in the community kit and I think it was the Visuals properties sheet - mainly for the common uses of each type so that people you are informing know more about what plastics can be turned into

Hi Everyone, I am based in Baltimore. I have found some interest but am working on a plan for what we can realistically accomplish here. I see there is a community point in Philly but I don't know how to find their contact info. If you are based in Philly can you reply here? I'd like to know how you decided to go with a community point instead of a collection point and since you are so close I'd like to know if it makes sense to have a community point here too.

@di5cordangerlo how do you install this bot what is it called, I want it on our Canadian PP server...
Avatar
Frederik C (ZA) 12/20/2020 9:29 PM
Bots are basically potential "spying" devices because they can monitor everything said in a server. While this is of less concern in public servers (taking into account that messages are not end-to-end encrypted), giving a bot, not controlled by yourself access to a big server, is actually a decision not to be taken lightly. Most people don't really think about it, because of the convenience of bots. It's even more important if the bot has Administrator privileges, because a hack on just one bot could wreak havoc on thousands of servers.
Avatar
How "Hackable" are they? I would feel discord is already not too "private" (it is centralized i think, and doesn't have end-to-end encryption?) If the bots are open source and not using data for marketing etc i would be fine with them (granted key word is the "I" , but is this an unpopular opinion)
Avatar
Frederik C (ZA) 12/20/2020 11:41 PM
If you can't audit the backend, there's not really a way to know. With open-source code, a largish support staff and crowd-funding, it is reasonably "safe." But not as safe as self-hosting. Anyway, the point is that there are legitimate concerns. Not all of them apply equally to every kind of server.
Avatar
@schivolarana a lot of people does i guess. But it only works if you write, not to translate what you want to read. I don't know if you noticed the whole breakdown of our italian friend in other channel, refusing to communicate in english and calling discord stupid 🤷
Avatar
Frederik C (ZA) 12/21/2020 4:40 PM
If you feel it's very important, bring it up in #deleted-channel or #just-chatting as a poll to see who wants auto-translation on the server. Also, you can copy the text someone posted (click "copy text") and paste it in your keyboard to see the translation. We can't assume everyone is using up-to-date software. We can't even assume everyone has smartphones. We can't assume anything, really. The server was started with the idea that the bare minimum requirement is access to an internet connected computer, and a basic ability to communicate in English. It's difficult to cater to the entire World. Impossible, really. We try our best.

We have just opened our workspace/ community point in Tauranga and I've been trying to follow the instructions for Figma to create a location badge but for some reason I cannot find the plugin for the varela font. Even though it is downloaded and installed, and I'm the administrator... I find the instructions in the PP file haven't helped me find the plugin so I can't progress. I don't think there are any other options to click in Figma that I didn't try, I'm wondering if maybe my installed font file is in the wrong place to be found. Anyone have a suggestion if I'm missing something?? Thanks!

Hi, I’m having issues with the Figma logo maker and the pluggins. Did you get this sorted??
Hi Tom, yeah mostly sorted... wish I could tell you every step but I forgot the exact path... it involved typing "figma" into the search box of discord (top right corner) and there was a post in the search results that explained how to get the plugin to be 'found' and that was 1 problem solved. Then I had this really weird experience (in Figma, to actually use the plugin) where selecting the curve and the location name both would not register with the plugin, the little box kept telling me to select 2 things, or select a curve, and from where I was looking both WERE selected. I wasted an hour of my time trying to convince the plugin I had selected both, ran out of time, then next day went back to it... and it worked. Surely a glitch and not just an idiot boomer 😉 The final snag is (and this is def my lack of skill) I don't really get how to change the inside circle background colour. I tried mucking around with all sorts of the layers, I found pizzas and bright colours, but I just wanted the simple green and it didn't work, so our logo is community point green on the outside and workspace blue on the inside, both of which are correct I suppose, but I'd quite like to learn how to use that kind of software competently and feel like I have control of the process!

Hi people, we've started a conversation about creating a database for plastic waste items. This has been popping up more often as a request within the Precious Plastic community. It can be a very useful tool for:
  • packaging designers
  • plastic collectors to find out the type of plastic when it isn't written on the product itself
  • overview of information about packaging, to create campaigns to make brands aware of their impact.
  • somehow it also becomes an online history museum about plastic packaging (because hopefully most of these items will disapere) One example is - https://guacamoleairplane.com/supplier-guide To get a step forward in making this database happening, we would like to start with brainstorming. Hello everyone My name is Lisa) I came across with one of the OneArmy projects, namely #PreciousPlastic, almost from its very beginning (app. 5 years ago). At that time, I was just starting my undergraduate studies at the University of St. Petersburg, Russia and did not yet know how much my life and my perception of the would change in the nearest future. After 4 years of studying International Relations, I couldn't stop thinking that I was moving in the wrong direction. Already at the university, I began to spread the ideas of #zerowaste #minimalism and #sustainable_consumption. It has been a year since my graduation and it is almost a year now since I am a Sustainable Development Master student in Sweden, Uppsala. Just recently, I started sharing my experience on Instagram @gr.eenko. Every day spent here, surrounded by the same driven people and the world experts in the field, is defo one exceptional experience. I will be very grateful if you join my path, or just share it with someone who is the same sustainablu-inspired!) All have a good weekend and warm spring days))!!

Hello everyone, @Julie @tomvb and myself are prototyping a "product to plastic types database" and we need your help! The "database" is currently made of this google sheets - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ztJJ98DO4QrWohieobSHNY7dxFVWxVUvwKRimjhIRKc/edit?usp=sharing In order to fill it up with information we've created this simple google form - https://forms.gle/MCSxE9qXxi11zRDD8 - for you to use whenever you see a product that is not in this database. A nice way to always have the form ready to use is by creating a shortcut on your phone home screen. To do that, follow these steps: 1. Open the form on your phone (Chrome on Android, Safari on iOS) 2. Share (iOS), Menu button (Android) 3. Save to home screen Example shown below. Please let us know if there is more information you think we need to collect. Thanks and happy sorting 🙂
Form responses 1 Timestamp,Barcode,Product Name,Category / Type of product,Country,Plastic Type 1 (Main package),Plastic Type 2 (Lid),Plastic Type 3 (Label),Plastic Type 4 (Secondary package),Plastic Type 5,Add Product Image,Feedback about packaging (Easy to recycle? Other issues?),Product Name
Create a new survey on your own or with others at the same time. Choose from a variety of survey types and analyze results in Google Forms. Free from Google.

Hey, we've been considering translation for 6 yrs now at Precious Plastic. Unfortunately it is not an easy topic and a hard one to crack. We have knowledge and content spread across multiple channels and mediums. As we like things to be done proper, translation should happen across websites, yt, discord, emails, support, patreon and so on. It is beyond our current means to support and develop an integrated translation. For this reason we are not working actively on translation atm. If your query is simply about YT translation go ahead 🙂

You cannot possibly have LESS know-how than me!! So just jump on in... I think there's plenty in the community who started with a panini press in the back shed like we did, then once you have a flat sheet of plastic you start to explore what you can make... keeping costs as low as possible while figuring out the best paths to pursue. You have a GOLD skill set with CAD/ CAM - I have two skill gaps I'm pedalling fast to try & fill this year, & both involve your skills, so you could most definitely add value to our enterprise. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to pay anyone, we are still developing product lines and I don't pay myself because there's nothing yet to pay with! But you can start your own enterprise some steps ahead of me and many others with the skills that you have - just got for it 🙂

At the Dutch Design Week I remember being given a tour of the workspace of Precious Plastic, and it stuck with me. Partly as a result, I chose to include Precious Plastic as the preferred way of recycling in my exam project for this year. Though the project is entirely conceptual, visualisations and estimates are required. I was hoping some of you guys could answer a few questions regarding the bricks themselves and a lot more about the production which i could not find on the Precious Plastics website. If you have spare time and are willing to help, a direct message would be immensely helpfull! Thank you in advance!

Hello. My name is Omar from Kenya. I am student from Jomo Kenyatta University doing my final year project. I have questions concerning plastic sheet press. How did you come up with the mathematics of this precious sheet press? In other words what formulas did you use to come up with the length, width, thickness, stresses, moments and even the angles? What was the starting point of these calculations? Did you base it on the load of the shredded plastics or by the length and width of sheets you make?

Hey sorry to bother but I am having an issue updating my community page. I am trying to switch from member to community point and I have made sure I get at least 6 stars on the check off sheet however when I go to upload a photo of my space it says "save failed". Has anyone encountered this in the past or can you point me in the right direction? I greatly appreciate your help 🙂

Hi there. I'm a newbie who early today got frustrated at all these plastic medicine bottles I had sitting around and wanted to see if I could remake them into anything else. I've already been using some to hold little things like pins and hair ties, but I only need so many of those. Other crafts that I looked up online to "recycle" them were just things like making a lighting fixture. That's okay, I suppose, but a bunch of pill bottles hot glue-gunned around a light bulb isn't something that I can see myself keeping for years. I'd rather make a larger container out of them if possible. A transparent orange storage box could look pretty cool. Again, as a beginner, I have no idea if that is even possible outside of a shop, but I might as well throw that out there. The medicine bottle is #5 PP, so I don't have any idea how easy or hard that is to work with. Of course, life provides plenty of other plastics that might be easier to start with.

Hi! I'm looking for someone with experience in making bricks/tiles by mixing sand and plastic! I'm trying to set up a formal facility
Avatar
Why sand?
9:41 PM
Isn’t there a sand shortage that’s going to lead to a glass shortage or am I misremembering? Just wondering if it adds anything structurally helpful
Avatar
Sand can be particularly resistant to compressive forces (not great with tensile) when mixed with something to bind it together 😃 . Concrete for example has sand in it! Depending upon where in the world you are, it can be pretty cheap and abundant and so if you are able to meet necessary material properties like modulus of elasticity and compressive strength for the bricks to be safe, it could be a cool way to reuse plastic

I'm just wondering if anyone's made a successful community project out of plastic recycling? (Oh yeah, also - hi from Australia! Sorry, my enthusiasm outran my manners.) Just that I've been thinking about plastic waste worldwide and how to start actually making a dent in it, one small installation at a time. And not so much for profit as for survival. I'd love to talk about how other successful nfp communities got set up and get some pointers. I'll check back on Discord every few days - please tag me or pm me.

Hi everyone I’m from the Philippines. I’m interested in focusing on starting with a collection point business which is called a junk shop here. A junk shop collects and buys recyclables then sells it to recycling plants. I’m hoping this way I can start small and then grow til I have my own recycling and sell products. I want to start small because I don’t want too much risk and also because I have to allot my savings in case of emergencies since I’m my family’s breadwinner. I have to be careful with what I spend. My biggest problem is I don’t know where to begin.

Hi Kbayan, sent DM. I'm working on a social project that basically would create buyers for plastic sheets for use in socialized housing. Marketing should be there before starting any business. Look around first on your neighborhood and see what plastic wares are usually used and check if you can manufacture it feasibly. You may look at plant containers, its currently hot these days .
12:56 PM
Of course you can start by buying and selling recyclables. My suggestion is locate where the biggest junkshops near your area, get different samples of plastic they are buying and how much, then you can now determine how much will be your buying price. To start your business go to DTI, and ask for the Barangay Micro Business Program form, its a not so much known program of the government that allows startups with less than 2 million sales , tax free. Hello community! I’m Armel working for Bosch in Germany. Since I’ve visited the website, lead here by @Rory - Sustainable Design Studio, I want to use the scalability of Bosch to support. My idea is the following: provide the machines you all need to set up your businesses, but as a pay-per-use system. That means that instead of paying thousands of euros to have the machines set, Bosch can sell it per minute it is used, for instance 1€/minute, to fit the need the closest and reduce the costs.
1:40 PM
I don’t imagine this business model to be creating a lot of margin for Bosch, but it would help the community to scale and grow, which is my main goal. I want to propose this into an intra-company start-up context, and I still have a lot of questions, and I think I will use this channel to ask them.
1:42 PM
Don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you so much!

Hello! I am a student at Southern Illinois University in the USA and run a club based off of the Precious Plastic movement. SIU is located by a forest that covers a large area at the bottom of the state and is, for the most part, a very environmentally friendly university. Each year, SIU awards monetary grants to its students for environmentally friendly projects or research initiatives, which a group of friends and I took advantage of to obtain the funds necessary to set up a club. If everything goes well, this club will soon allow students to gain hands- on experience in product design and promote small scale recycling. I am not nearly as experienced as some of the other people on this server, but I tried to answer your questions as best I could in the thread attached to your post. (I didnt realize threads show up next to the text channels though and I couldn't delete it so I set the thread to archive in one hour so that it hopefully won't disrupt the server) The response was a bit long so I attached it to this word document. https://forms.gle/upASjTHEaWdZijmd8 HPO invites you to share your skills in the field of material recycling at «Milano Design Week 2022». The international architectural practice Andrea Caputo is curating and hosting an exhibition designed by HPO, starting this June. The exhibition focuses specifically on objects destruction and materials transformation, displaying several functioning shredding machines in front of a large public. The show is organized as an audiovisual performance, with the collaboration of sound/lighting designers and any individual who is interested in sharing their cultural or material contribution regarding the theme of material transformation. During the Design Week a series of talks, musical events, and performances are scheduled to be staged around these machines. Therefore, HPO invites all the community that gathers around material destruction and recycling to bring their shredders to Milan and/or join the event with a physical or digital contribution. With the help of the HPO staff, the machine owners will be asked to show the process to the public in some specific moments during the Design Week, based on their availability. The exhibition will be set up in a 350 sm venue, nearby Milano Centrale railway station. It will be open to the public from 6th to 13th June 2022. If you are interested in bringing your shredder to Milan please let us know, so we could manage to bring it there in the last week of May. All inquiries can be sent to info@h-p-o.eu If you are interested in participating or in giving a proposal, do not hesitate to send us an e-mail. Submission: We ask you to fill out this form by May 6th and you will hear back from HPO immediately. https://forms.gle/upASjTHEaWdZijmd8 www.h-p-o.eu www.andreacaputo.com Thank you!

There could be. But you'd need to find someone who wants to buy the plastic from you or find people who are willing to pay you for picking up litter. If your country/state/province has a deposit program on bottles and cans, then you might be able to get the deposit money back.

in my region (btw: austria), recycling costs even as at least one being a nonprofitorganisation. still I think it's not work the truck's fuel if it can get upcycled by PreciousPlastic's community instead? that's why I'm focusing on sharing unshreddered plastic so others could re-shape its melted amounts (why offering them for coins only? I'd just refer to time/mins wasted at red-trafficlights with no cars/people, which could preferable be just a crosswalk instead)

If i were to make a roof, i would make it more like a shingle roof. The team at Project Kamp made a roof but had lots of trouble with the joints due to warpage. Consider making plastic slats, it will use more material than making a flat roof but you wont have the sheet warpage issue i think. Also you'll need some sort of UV protection. Plastic crutches? All the plastic beams/planks/extrusions i've made have me feeling that it wont be sturdy enough but it wouldn't hurt to try making one to see if it's feasible or not.

If your school would need/like any non-faculty volunteers (software engineer by trade, but pretty handy with making stuff too) I'd be happy to join in with you guys, or if your school doesn't want to/can't start one, perhaps any interested students could help us all get something moving in the local area outside of the school?

Hello Danielle! Disclaimer, I'm relatively new to Precious Plastic myself but I've been doing a lot of research so I'll try to help! I haven't heard of a DIY solution for making plastic thread/yarn -- I've seen 3D printer filament made, and the process is theoretically similar, but I don't know that anyone has worked out the necessary tools and extra steps. Since the yarn/thread is made of many individual filaments wound together, you'd need an extruder plate with a lot of tiny holes, then some sort of winding machine to combine the individual strands into a single thread. Brand name manufacturers have big industrial machines to do it, but I'm not sure how feasible it is on a smaller scale. Here's a primer video for how it's done in the industry: https://youtu.be/K1mNnoUBeZM

Avatar
thank you! I have an electric spinning wheel already so theoretically, I'd only need the machines to do the shredding, melting, and extruding
Avatar
Yah, I think the process is solved all the way up to the actual extrusion of the filaments -- that's the tricky part, I think, because you need to get the plastic REALLY thin before it cools and solidifies. Might be worthwhile to look into how folks are making 3D printer filament and see if there's a way to modify the process to get even thinner diameter filament.

I've made some stringy mess with my extrusion machine. If you were to extrude HDPE and then pull the plastic while it extrudes, you can get small threads, but I don't think it's possible to get it as small as a fiber you'd find in yarn with this method but I could be wrong.

Regarding the crutches, I think it would be interesting to make the parts that are already originally plastic (arm support and handles) out of recycled plastic, but keeping the tubes in aluminum

Sorry for all the questions and if this isn't the right place to ask - sorry again - please point me in the right direction.

You should hit up Precious Plastic LA to see what they're up to and pick their brain. https://www.instagram.com/preciousplasticla/ Costs to get running? well, if you own a house and it has a garage then you can sort of absorb some costs that way. Some people get creative with where they operate by finding free places to operate out of. Sometimes it takes a bit of networking and you can find something. Another thing to consider is have a look for FabLabs. LA is a big area so you can try and pick the brains of people who run a fablab, in Costa Mesa there's a fablab and i feel that precious plastic machines fit right in with their equipment. To run a successful community? My wife says that communities are formed when people are forced to deal with eachother. It can be a difficult task, but it should be possible to create some sort of educational program to teach people about plastic recycling for high schools or community college. I have not partnered with either but what I have seen is that some high schools or universities might have a teacher who is interested in precious plastic and manages to get a grant to make a workspace happen.
7:44 AM
But, there's a lot of ways things can go. I'm not sure what the best way to go is, but do your homework.

We ordered it in BULK, with price just 0,01 EUR/sticker🫰 . It was pre-cutted circular shape. Since PP logo is not perfect circle, graphic designer just added little thin black circular layer. Maybe you would find it handy ->. Disadvantage is , that it is not looking 100% perfect, but for regular and repeating usage its working great 🙌 (edited)

fiber we have made a couple years ago. we made a spray gun attached to the end of the extrusion machine, cranked up the heat to 300c. the air was fed from a air compressor and then thru the heating element of a hot air gun and then to the nozzle. that was the most difficult part as we burned out many heat elements, and everything was tig welded stainless with a lot of custom lathe turned parts. . You could also make a spinnerette which is like a cotton candy machine with PET plastic. You could drip hot PET from the extrusion to a cotton candy machine (where the sugar is fed in) although have not tried that. Lastly you could use a blower and nozzle like Kolev does and drip hot plastic in front of the blower nozzle which will give you a airborne stream of fiber that will be cool by the time it lands across the room.

We have a 400m² land with a great access to the road and the beach is only 40m away (easy to access to boat or ship to import/export goods)

We have been thinking of making walls of the workspace from metal roof panels, some offered that should be stone bricks, what do you advice?

You could do that. If you really want to be fancy try using the brick mold (https://bazar.preciousplastic.com/moulds/extruder-moulds/v4-open-brick-mould/).
11:08 PM
Or you could use the brick mold to create walls inside the building if you won’t want that to be the exterior.

The answer depends on what you want to do. Just make sure you have enough funding and a plan

I'm fairly new to doing this (under a year) but can make some observations based on my experience. The first is that you will have NO SHORTAGE of plastic! The amount of plastic waste in our communities is absolutely shocking, and very little of it gets recycled. If you're like me, your urge is to figure out how to recycle it all! But that ways lies madness. We can't fix everything today, so we should focus first on where we can have the most impact for the least effort. So for example, #2 plastics such as milk jugs are very widely recycled and have good markets -- people will want to save you their milk jugs, but if there is probably industrial scale recycling in your community that already takes very good care of that. If you can identify a plastic source that is currently not recycled, and it's a good source (easy to shred, minimal or no sorting or cleaning required), you have the best makings of both a business plan (spending the least to go from waste plastic to shreds for sale) and something that may appeal to funding opportunities such as grants. I think you'll find that it's not as easy as the videos make it look. I don't want to tell you to get a loan and jump in. Depending on where you live, there might be existing recycling chain models that work fairly well. Perhaps some recycling association? They likely use machines that have higher capacity than what precious plastic has. But just writer up a business plan and try and figure out where the plastics come from and where it goes, and how you can make money. It's not always easy.

I suggest doing a Safety Brief before people start using the workspace. Don't let inexperienced folks in without giving some sort of orientation first. Don't stick fingers in running machines. Don't touch hot things without gloves. Don't put hair or clothing or anything dangly near the shredder. People with long hair should do something to keep their hair out of the machines. You don't pull out food from the oven when it's hot by your bare hands, plastic is the same. Getting burned sometimes happens. Make sure your gear is right. I've been doing this for years and i still get a mild burn or cut here and there. Usually a cut from sharp edges of moulds or a burn from me working on something i don't normally do.

Make sure your space is well ventilated but maybe don't have fans blowing directly on the machines.

A quick Google search shows results for makerspaces in Denver and surrounding area. Hopefully you'll make the right connections in these communities to sort out your material and tooling needs. My suggestion for you is to buy a kit. You probably are trying to save money, so one way to do this is to buy a kit. Buying a shredder box plus motor and gearbox will save you a lot of hassle because it should all fit together just fine. Then you focus on some of the electronics and building a frame for the shredder to mount to.

Hello! Wasn't sure where to ask this since I can't type in any bazar related channel as far as I'm aware... Is there a way to filter the sellers by location or look for a specific one? There is a machine workspace in Colorado by a "tom-k" and I was hoping to see if he sells before I email him. I'm also just looking to see his stuff not actually buy yet for probably a while because I might work with a few groups in my university to write a grant and allow us to purchase machines and I would prefer to buy them from as close as possible which is where looking by location would be helpful
Avatar
Has anyone conducted an energy analysis on creating plastic sheets? I looked through the how-to of the PP community section but there isn't any research I could find. Also microplastic research. Is there a location where research on PP is shared?
Avatar
Microplastic is interesting - I've been back and forth thinking about it but it seems like all plastic (unless it's buried or otherwise captured/protected) is guaranteed to turn into microplastics. We shouldn't aim to make the problem worse but consolidating plastic into large parts/reusing it one more time seems like morally/ethically better than it being trash unless/until professional or commercial reuse/recapture becomes commonplace
Avatar
Agreed. It seems like a mostly unavoidable problem at this point. As you mentioned, we certainly don't want to contribute to making it worse. I think it would be interesting to test the microplastic "emission" from some of the PP products such as the plastic tiles being used for roofing or other outdoor uses that would normally not contain plastic.

My larger curiosity is the energy use needed to grind and melt the plastic into sheets.

Ben - Precious Plastic Ciledug 4/7/2023 1:57 PM
It's not super difficult to figure this out but you'll need to find someone who has taken the time to record meter readings. 15kw for sheet press when it's heating up to target temperature. Duty cycle will vary on machine conditions (cold room, wind, material, construction). If duty cycle is 50% then you'll see something like 7.5kwh plus however long it took for temperature to stabilize. The numbers might be less or more, just a guesstimate. Shredder might be rated at 1.5kw, so running it under full load for 1 hour would get you 1.5kwh. This is not likely a figure you'll hit because you will be jamming your machine. Really you need to find someone who has these machines and take the time and ability to get the real numbers.
Avatar
Agreed, best way to do it would just be to measure power draw from the wall with a simple plug-in unit. I could set up the experiment so it would just be plug and play if there was someone willing to do the testing on their machines. Then I could take the data and make a report for the site. Plastic recycling is obviously great but I think it's important to measure the impact it's having on other systems like power usage. (edited)

@Danielle Maybe they use some device like I've seen on youtube using a hotmelt glue to make fake spider webs?

Hello Ruben, my name is Thomé and I am part of the Team of PP and collaborated to create the Impact survey. The choice for Tons was due to technical aspects of the form tool and the reading and interpretation of the data. After investigation we realized that using Tons would be the best way to make the data uniform and better to process. We are realizing that maybe wasn’t too obvious to the community that 100kg of plastic could be inputted as 0.1 T of plastic, there were some confusion there and we will improve this for next year. Many workspaces understood it but some didn’t. Soon we are releasing some of the results and insights collected with the impact survey, we will announce on our communication channels, but thank you for bringing this up! (edited)

Does anyone know of data showing how much money a lb of plastic costs to clean and shred? I want to see if I could make a viable business but I would like to see if other models work and how much plastic should be sold at whatever price to make it all sustainable
Avatar
Christopher - Unmake Plastic 8/14/2023 6:03 AM
I reckon that's like asking "how much does it cost to make a sandwich?". There are just too many factors- what are your utility rates for power and water? Are you accounting for facility costs? Labor? Cost of acquisition of plastic AND customers- the list goes on. Don't get me wrong, it would be great to hear how much folks are paying to collect, clean, shred, store, market, and deliver a kilo of plastic- even if significantly different from what your circumstance can realize, just having a ball-park figure might provide a basis for consideration. Of course, the answer to "how much" has to be paired to "how was that achieved" to really have meaning. I reckon the question is backwards, though- the REAL question is "who is my customer? For what? -and at what price?" With a robust manufacturing base, you have the challenge of gearing up to meet volume requirements to be a reliable part of the supply chain. Short of that, the prospect becomes "what value can I add to the plastic beyond commodity refinement?" Whatever the fractional net per kilo, the question becomes "how many kilos do I have to process per day to support everybody in the business and all of our needs?" By all accounts, that's a "we" proposition, not a "me" proposition. Searching this site, 'how much a self-supporting plastic shop needs to make a go of of it' is a periodic question. As I recall, a consensus from those-who-have was around $80k.

Strongly agree with all this. The big question is how you add value and to whom. An industrial scale recycler sells clean filtered pelletized recycled plastic for under $1 per pound. You probably can't compete head to head with that... So the question is where do you build a niche? Who is willing to buy from you at a premium and why?

I cannot compete with shredding facilities. It's cheaper for me to give them my collected plastics and buy cleaned, sorted, and shredded plastic. Precious Plastic is great for small scale stuff but for you to compete with shredding you need better machines and systems.

Ben - Precious Plastic Ciledug 8/15/2023 6:30 AM
Where does the plastic go from where you live? Precious Plastic workspaces only work so well, we do need the big recyclers as they suck in a lot of materials and often are looking for more (where I am at least). Find out what recyclers are nearby, find out where your plastic goes through the municipality's system. Maybe you'll find out some useful information and find some niche space where you can operate.

Gesturing back to the PP Survey, we are ALL 'drops in the bucket'- and that's how change happens. If you take those numbers as representative of anything, in very, very few years, the greater PP community actually substantively reduced plastic whilding, trashing, and incineration: In 2022 alone, PP participants addressed more than 0.14875 of that year's liability. So, at today's waste rate, with a 1000 X multiple, PP-inspired projects alone may actually start reducing plastic levels in the environment. We've got the lever to pull- but it would be self defeating to look for world-economy movement in direct response to our efforts NOW. So, the way I reconcile this for myself: how many life-times of plastic consumption can I personally divert from the waste stream? After mitigating our own personal damage, our existence is reducing net harm. Some math: where I'm at, the annual plastic liability per-capita is estimated to be around 221 kilos, and average life span 76.4 years; perhaps overly simplistic, that comes to a life-time liability of 16.9 metric tons of plastic. 17 metric tons- that's my break-even point. That's not my end goal- not even close. Without setting goals, our efforts can't be judged relative to the mountain of plastic. Set some goals, dude. (edited)

I'm looking at the different channels but I don't see any products really useful in our everyday life, what surprised me because the pp/HDPE/LDPE are a type of plastic simple to recycle, and we use a lot of it every day

Recycled plastics aren't allowed to be used for food contact (I bet 90% of your daily plastic use). I think one of the biggest misconceptions with Precious Plastic is that the battle is to make the thing - the hard part is the sales/marketing channel to make a product you can actually sell in volume if you're looking to scale into a sustainable business. It's very cool to make neat looking art/unique tables/etc, it's very hard to scale that into a business that turns product consistently/scalably

Something that can be done and in volume is pipe, for Gray water, to replace the PVC pipe, the color is not important and it doesn't need to be food safe

HDPE/LDPE can't be solvent glued like ABS or PVC pipe, I don't think PP has any solvent bonding method but I could be wrong? Even for a graywater application you couldn't use self-made in any country/state/municipality who has plumbing codes because they have to be certified/listed as pipe suitable for plumbing.
4:36 PM
In short, you could recycle ABS plastics into ABS plumbing pipe, but you'd need to have your factory get through some certification/testing authority to sell your material
4:37 PM
I'm guessing the variable quality and properties of recycled resins would make it very difficult to ensure consistent quality in your output

You know PE are used to making pipes for a long time now, and there is no problem connecting them

There ARE challenges- and solutions. As with most things, accessibility to tech and cost are primary determiners of how practical a solution is. https://www.pe100plus.com/PE-Pipes/Technical-guidance/model/Construction/methods/r1049.html (edited)

You'd use compression fittings instead of glue. Ive seen and used PE and PP pipes/tubing and they always use compression fittings.

Just a reminder of one reason why I hate PVC > https://www.hunker.com/12435859/the-hazards-of-pvc-glue-and-primer
PVC cement (glue) and primer is used to soften pipes and weld pieces of plumbing together. Polyvinyl chloride secures pieces of pipe quickly in a process called solvent welding. First the primer is applied and then the cement to join the pipes.
